CALL FOR PAPERS/ PhD RESEARCH SUMMARIES
The European Criminal Law Academic Network is proud to announce the 7th ECLAN PhD Seminar on European Criminal Justice to be held in Basel on 16th-17th November 2017. The Seminar will be organized by the Juristische Fakultät of the University of Basel.
The ECLAN PhD seminar will provide a friendly environment in which PhD candidates can gain experience in presenting their research, learn from each other’s research and develop contacts with other researchers in their field. This PhD seminar aims to gather together PhD candidates working in the field of EU criminal law and holding a degree in law, political science or international studies.
Interestingly this year, the PhD seminar will organise a session dedicated to the digital revolution that has occurred the past years and its subsequent consequences on the criminal justice system applying within the EU.
Technology has had a tremendous impact on the legislation of the EU and the Member States, including in criminal matters. Hereafter are potential subjects that could be of interest to the PhD seminar, among other EU criminal law researches :
- Robots and Criminal Liability: What Way Forward? Harmonization, Approximation or Regulation on National Level?
- Criminal Liability and Law Enforcement in the Digital Age in a Comparative Perspective
- Mutual Recognition of Decisions in Criminal Law and Criminal Procedure (Quid of Digital Evidence?)
- Privacy as a European Value in the Age of Big Data
- Ethics as a European Challenge Facing AI
The application should encompass:
- A CV with full contact details;
- An indication of the starting date and envisaged end date of the PhD thesis;
- And, a description of maximum 5 pages of the research subject and methodology.
Application deadline: 30 September 2017.

The selected students will give a presentation of her/his work in front of her/his peers.
Then, discussants will include the members of the ECLAN Management Committee: Prof. Anne Weyembergh (ULB-IEE), Prof. Sabine Gless (University of Basel), Prof. Katalin Ligeti (University of Luxembourg), Prof. Valsamis Mitsilegas (Queen Mary University of London), Prof. Pedro Caeiro (University of Coimbra), Prof. Robert Kert (Vienna University of Economics and Business) and Prof. Jørn Vestergaard (University of Copenhagen).
The floor will be open to debates.
Submitted papers will also be considered for publication in the New Journal of European Criminal Law (N.J.E.C.L.).
Expenses linked to the participation at the PhD seminar unfortunately cannot be covered. However, the organizers will provide logistical support to PhD students in order to identify the best means to reach the venue as well as accommodation solutions.
