Council Framework Decision 2002/584/JHA of 13 June 2002 on the European arrest warrant and the surrender procedures between Member States

The first instrument implementing the principle of mutual recognition replaced the extradition system among the Member States of the EU. Judicial authorities are thus required to recognise and execute arrest warrants across the AFSJ, save in cases where a ground for refusal is applicable.

This Framework Decision was amended by Framework Decision 2009/299/JHA with regard to decisions rendered in the absence of the person concerned during the trial.
