Council Decision 2009/371/JHA of 6 April 2009 establishing the European Police Office (EUROPOL)
This Decision replaces the Europol Convention. Apart from the change of legal nature, differences between the new Decision and the Europol Convention are limited. They include an extension of the competence of Europol (abolition of the requirement of the existence of a criminal organisation involved in the case concerned). A major change is also that Europol will be funded by the EU and not by the Member States as in the Europol convention. Europol's staff will be subject to the EU's Staff regulations.
The entry into force of the Regulation of the European Parliament and of the Council on the European Union Agency for Law Enforcement Cooperation and Training (Europol) [COM(2013)173 final of 27.3.2013] will repeal all previous decisions.
